There is nothing wrong with you

--

As Dr. Gabor Mate often says, “there is nothing wrong with you.” I want to unpack this to deeply understand it.

There are the things that happened to us, especially in childhood, AND there is how it made us feel which determined what we made it mean about ourselves. If we felt terrible about it, like sad, angry or afraid, then we often made it mean something about ourselves like:

  • I am bad
  • I am wrong
  • I am not safe
  • I don’t matter
  • I am alone
  • I am worthless

Now if something happened that made us feel happy, joyous, peaceful, or excited we often made it mean something about ourselves like:

  • I am good
  • I am right
  • I am safe
  • I matter
  • I am worthy

Here is the thing, these events happened- this is real. AND you made them mean something about you — this is the story.

You are a spiritual being having a human experience. Part of this human experience are these things that happen. You have made these experiences mean that there is something wrong with you. But actually there is nothing wrong with you AND these things happened. These things happened not because there was something right or wrong with you….they only happened. AND can you see where you have given these events meaning by making it mean there is something wrong with you?

This is not an easy concept for the mind to unpack at first, this is why over the next few posts I will be unpacking this to give you a deeper understanding.

In my next post, I will talk about why you think something is wrong with you… Stay tuned!

I’d love to hear your reaction to this message. Comment and let me know…I promise to read and respond.

Much Love & Light,
